Syona aka the Silicon Shaman
So, I was up late last night, reading and with a bit of headache, when I had to get in some fuel in for the fire. So, just as opening the coal shed door I spotted movement along the road at the back.

Now it's not unusual to get foxes, rabbits even the occasional badger around here. We're right on the edge fo the suburban area, and out beyond the ring of big grey steel box warehouses are fields and old woodland.

But this was a fox. A pure snow white fox. Very obviously not a dog.

It stopped a moment, sensing I was watching, and looked straight at me with bright blue eyes. Then it blinked, and with a bob of it's head in my direction, trotted off like it had some place else to be.

You do not expect to see a Kitsune in Yorkshire.... especially in the arse-end of nowhere that is Castleford.

But I swear, that's what it seemed to be.

Foxes are more adaptable to suburban and even urban environments than people think, and white or nearly-white foxes are relatively common... but the blue eyes indicate that it was an albino, which is probably rare.

Or it wasn't a physical fox at all...

I admit, the thought crossed my mind. The local foxes I've seen are all pretty much normal coloured...

But albinism, and other pigmentation anomalies, do occur in all vertebrate species (and a number of invertebrates as well).

Did you get a chance to count how many tails the fox had? :-)

It can't have been a true albino, it had a black nose as well as blue eyes [actually thinking about it, it looked a bit like an Arctic fox, except the normal size for a European fox] and as far as I could tell it only had the one tail... so probably only a young Kitsune!

I'm a bit surprised that it deigned to notice you, considering you're far more of a cat person. (Although foxes are sometimes referred to as "the cats of the dog world"...)

I think being a shaman might have had something to do with it... or the fact we were both awake when any sane person would be asleep.. [foxes are crepuscular mostly.]

Ace Lightning: full moon
Well, I'm a shaman of a sort myself. Although my abilities are more related to machinery, occasionally an animal will make contact - particularly my bunnies, and of course Loki, but I spotted an occasional fox or deer in my yard at my previous house, and quite a lot of wild rabbits! And I'm always awake when any sane person would be asleep - but I've never claimed to be a sane person :-)
